Raising my three boys

Hannah Marshal

I am raising three boys. Three boys who, one day will become three men.

It feels like a lot sometimes, because I want them to truly know the role they have in our society being men, the role they have in creating new standards, the role they have in honouring, respecting, valuing, loving, caring and supporting the women they will meet in their lives.

I want them to know that they need to treat women as equal. No matter their job, no matter their choices. I want them to know that women are fierce, that they are loving, that they are clever, they are ambitious, that women are strong, they are brave, they are powerful, that they are emotional and they are sensitive (and that is actually a really good thing.)

I want them to celebrate women, and the impact that they have no matter what role, no matter what career.

I want them to know that men and women are different, but that does not mean they are less than, they are not weak.

I want them to know that women can be whatever they want to be. Women can do it. And they will be there, right by their side celebrating them, cheering with them.

A woman should be celebrated. In every form, a daughter, a sister a mother, a wife, a friend.

I would like to acknowledge the Awabakal people as the traditional owners of the land we work, play and live. I pay my respects to their Elders past and present.

I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today.
